A disturbing incident in Cobb County has left auto shop workers shaken after a mother allegedly left her infant daughter behind and returned minutes later carrying a knife.
A Georgia mother is facing criminal charges after allegedly leaving her 6-month-old daughter with employees at an auto service shop before returning about 15 minutes later with a knife, according to reports from local authorities and witnesses.
The incident happened on the morning of Saturday, October 24, at a Jiffy Lube on Floyd Road in Cobb County, Georgia. Police identified the woman as 35-year-old Laraven Davis, who was charged with child abandonment and reckless conduct.
According to reports, Davis approached employees at the business while pushing a stroller with her infant daughter inside. Assistant manager Jarayya Mayes said the woman initially struck up a conversation with workers about how cute her baby was before asking them to watch the child while she went to take care of something.
However, the situation reportedly took a disturbing turn when the woman allegedly suggested that the employees could keep the baby if she did not return.
Mayes told FOX 5 Atlanta that Davis repeatedly mentioned paperwork being inside the baby’s bag and indicated that the workers should contact authorities if she failed to come back.
The unusual request immediately raised concerns for the employees, who suddenly found themselves responsible for a child they had never met before.
After Davis allegedly walked away from the business, Mayes contacted 911 and checked on the infant.
According to her account, the baby was wearing a soaked diaper and had visible rashes on her neck and body. Police later confirmed that the child had soiled clothing and multiple rashes, although authorities said she was otherwise in overall good health.
The employees reportedly remained with the baby while waiting for help to arrive.
But before the situation could be resolved, the mother allegedly returned to the shop carrying a knife.
According to Mayes, Davis came back approximately 15 minutes after leaving and began demanding that the employees give her daughter back. The sudden appearance of a weapon reportedly heightened concerns for the baby’s safety.
Mayes said the woman appeared to be in a hurry, insisting that she needed to leave with the child because something had happened.
With the situation escalating, employees remained in contact with emergency dispatchers, who instructed them not to allow the woman to leave with the infant as officers responded to the scene.
Police Arrest Mother as Baby Is Taken to Hospital
Cobb County police arrived and arrested Davis in connection with the incident. She was charged with child abandonment and reckless conduct, according to authorities.
Meanwhile, paramedics transported the 6-month-old girl to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. The child was subsequently placed in the custody of Georgia’s Division of Family and Children Services, according to CBS News Atlanta.
Mayes described the experience as emotionally overwhelming, explaining that she was moved by concern for the infant and felt compelled to intervene.
As a mother herself, she said watching another child potentially being left in an unsafe situation was heartbreaking.
The employee’s decision to contact emergency services ensured that authorities were alerted while the baby remained at the business.
Although the arrest has brought attention to the case, several questions remain unanswered, including what prompted Davis to allegedly leave her daughter with strangers and why she returned carrying a knife.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the alleged actions.
