SHELBY, N.C. — A police officer in Shelby, North Carolina, has been fired after a doorbell camera video showing him repeatedly striking a woman during an arrest circulated widely on social media, prompting public outrage, protests, and an independent investigation.
The incident occurred on May 29 and was captured on residential surveillance footage that quickly spread online.
The video appears to show a Shelby police officer forcing a woman to the ground before striking her multiple times while positioned on top of her during an arrest.
The woman has been identified by authorities as Cherie Moore.
In a press conference on May 30, Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser announced that the officer involved had been terminated following an internal review. The officer had initially been placed on administrative suspension while the department investigated the encounter.
City officials described the actions shown in the video as disturbing and unacceptable. Fraser said the department’s findings have been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), which will conduct an independent review to determine whether any criminal violations occurred.
The footage appears to show Moore grabbing the officer’s arm before the officer takes her to the ground. Moments later, the officer can be seen striking her repeatedly while she is pinned beneath him. A second officer then enters the frame and appears to intervene, telling the officer to stop and take control of the situation.
Moore can be heard in the video saying she does not have a warrant and asking officers to call her father. At one point, she also appears to state that she is not taking her medication and requests mental health assistance.
Authorities said Moore was later charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a government official. Court proceedings related to those charges remain pending.
The video sparked demonstrations in downtown Shelby, where community members gathered to demand accountability and transparency from local officials. Family members of Moore publicly criticized the officer’s actions and called for criminal charges to be considered.
The case has intensified discussions about police use of force, officer accountability, and interactions involving individuals who may be experiencing mental health challenges. Community leaders have urged residents to allow the SBI investigation to proceed while continuing to seek answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Officials have not publicly released the name of the fired officer as of Saturday afternoon.
The SBI investigation remains ongoing.
