Four people were injured early Sunday morning when gunfire erupted during a memorial gathering for Jacksonville rapper Lil Poppa on the city’s Eastside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
According to Actionnewsjax.com The shooting occurred shortly after midnight near the intersection of A. Philip Randolph Boulevard and Jessie Street, where friends, family members, and community supporters had gathered to honor the late artist.
Authorities said multiple shots were fired into the crowd, striking four adults — two women, ages 34 and 39, and two men, ages 37 and 43. All victims were transported to local hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police have not released a suspect description and say the investigation remains ongoing.
Detectives spent several hours canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing potential surveillance footage.
The gathering was organized to remember Lil Poppa, born Janarious Wheeler, a Jacksonville native known for his melodic Southern rap style and emotionally reflective lyrics.
The 25-year-old artist had built a national following and was widely recognized as one of the city’s rising hip-hop voices.
Community members said the memorial had been peaceful earlier in the evening, with attendees sharing food, music, and memories before the violence disrupted the event. Some nearby residents expressed frustration over the incident, calling for increased safety measures at large gatherings.
“This was supposed to be a time to celebrate someone’s life,” one attendee said. “It’s heartbreaking that it ended like this.”
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to contact law enforcement or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
No arrests have been announced as of Monday afternoon.
