A North Carolina mother is demanding answers after her 3-year-old son reportedly suffered a serious head injury while attending a daycare in Concord — and she says she still doesn’t know exactly what happened.
Cashay Crowe says her son, Legend, was injured while attending McGill Learning Center in Concord, North Carolina. According to Crowe, daycare staff contacted her hours after the incident and told her that another child had pushed Legend.
But when Crowe arrived at the daycare, she says she was shocked by what she saw.
“He had a knot on his head, and he was holding ice to his head,” Crowe told WSOC-TV.
What reportedly started as swelling on Legend’s forehead later became more alarming. Crowe says the bruising spread around both of her son’s eyes, forcing the family to make two trips to the hospital.
Now, the concerned mother says she has more questions than answers.
According to McGill Learning Center, the incident happened on August 24, 2026, and involved another child of the same age. The daycare said there was a proper staff-to-child ratio at the time and that there were initially no visible signs of injury immediately after the incident.
The center said Legend later developed swelling on his forehead, at which point his mother was contacted and ice was applied.
In a statement provided to Channel 9, McGill Learning Center said it regretted that the child was injured and remains committed to providing a safe environment for children. The center also said an investigation is ongoing and that it is cooperating with the appropriate entities.
The daycare said it could not release information about the other child involved because of privacy concerns.
Crowe, however, says she simply wants to know exactly what happened to her son.
“I don’t know; that’s my biggest thing,” she said. “I just want to know.”
The situation has also reportedly left the 3-year-old emotionally affected. Crowe says Legend is traumatized and does not want to return to daycare.
Concord police confirmed to WSOC-TV that there have been two other reports involving the daycare since 2024, including one incident that resulted in a child abuse charge. However, Crowe has made it clear that she does not want to jump to conclusions about what happened to her own son.
For now, she is focused on getting answers and making sure her child recovers.
Despite everything, Crowe says she is grateful that her son is home and doing better.
“He’s home,” she said. “He’s playing with toys, he’s talking, he’s praying. He’s good. He’s blessed.”
Legend’s bruising has reportedly been improving, but questions surrounding the incident remain.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Child Development and Early Education told Channel 9 that it is aware of concerns surrounding the incident and is considering next steps. Officials said they could not provide additional details regarding potential investigations.
As the investigation continues, Legend’s mother says she is still searching for the one thing she has wanted from the beginning: the truth about what happened to her 3-year-old son while he was supposed to be under the care of the daycare.
