A 21-year-old Wisconsin woman is facing serious charges after authorities say she stabbed her own mother at least 10 times during a violent confrontation at a Chick-fil-A parking lot in Georgia.
Shyanniah Ma’Ree Johnson, 21, of Milwaukee, was arrested following the August 20 incident in Cherokee County. Investigators say Johnson and her 39-year-old mother were traveling north on Interstate 75 toward Wisconsin when an argument between the two women reportedly turned physical.
The two eventually exited the interstate and pulled into the parking lot of a Chick-fil-A on Highway 92 near I-75 in Acworth. According to investigators, the confrontation continued inside the vehicle before Johnson allegedly attacked her mother with a knife.
Authorities say the woman suffered no fewer than 10 stab wounds during the attack. Johnson was also injured in the leg during the confrontation.
After allegedly stabbing her mother, Johnson reportedly left the parking lot with two young children who were inside the vehicle.
The injured mother managed to make her way into the Chick-fil-A, where she reportedly encountered two off-duty Acworth police officers who were inside the restaurant.
The officers immediately stepped in to help until emergency medical personnel arrived. One of the officers reportedly used a tourniquet to help control the woman’s bleeding before she was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
The mother was later released from the hospital.
Meanwhile, authorities began searching for Johnson and the vehicle. Investigators were able to use automated license plate reader technology to track the vehicle as it traveled north.
Johnson was eventually stopped in Whitfield County by law enforcement officers. She was taken to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton for treatment of the leg injury she reportedly suffered during the altercation.
The two children were not physically injured. They were subsequently placed in the custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services.
Johnson was initially charged with aggravated assault under Georgia’s Family Violence Act. Newer reporting indicates she is also facing two counts of child cruelty in connection with the incident.
Authorities have said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges could potentially be filed as investigators continue reviewing what happened.
The case has also drawn attention because of the quick actions of the two off-duty officers who happened to be inside the restaurant when the wounded woman ran inside for help. Their intervention helped stabilize her before paramedics arrived.
For now, Johnson remains accused of the crimes, and the allegations against her have not been proven in court. The case is expected to move forward through the Georgia court system as prosecutors and investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
The incident has left many questions about what caused the argument between the mother and daughter to escalate into such a violent confrontation, particularly with two young children reportedly inside the vehicle at the time.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not ruled out additional charges.
