8 arrested for stealing $440k Worth Of Air Jordan's from train.

In early March 2026, deputies with the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office arrested eight people who were trying to steal merchandise from a freight train near Joseph City, Arizona.

According to azfamily.com Investigators received a tip that a train heist was being planned targeting a freight train operated by BNSF Railway.

Deputies and federal agents watched the area near the tracks and soon saw several suspects breaking into boxcars and removing expensive merchandise.

The suspects loaded the stolen cargo — including high-value sports sneakers made by Nike — into a U-Haul truck, a van, and a trailer. When law enforcement officers moved in, the group tried to flee the scene in several vehicles.

Authorities used spike strips to stop one of the vehicles. Some suspects ran into the desert after abandoning the vehicles, but after a search of the area, all eight suspects were eventually located and arrested.

Officials said the cargo involved nearly 2,000 pairs of Nike sneakers. The shipment was estimated to be worth more than $440,000. Some of the shoes were unreleased Air Jordan models, which can sell for much more on the resale market.

The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to BNSF Railway. The suspects were transported to Flagstaff, Arizona and then turned over to federal authorities for further investigation.

Authorities also said that train burglaries targeting sneaker shipments have increased in Arizona, partly because remote desert areas make it easier for criminals to break into freight trains.
