A Milwaukee, Wisconsin man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after a violent outburst that left his infant son with life-altering injuries. Authorities say the incident occurred after the father became enraged while playing the basketball video game NBA 2K.
The defendant, Jalin A. White, 22, was caring for his 8-month-old son at a residence in Milwaukee on November 5, 2024. According to prosecutors, White became frustrated during a video game session and reacted by forcefully throwing his child against a wall.
Emergency responders were called to the home after the child’s mother, whose name has not been publicly released to protect the child’s privacy, returned and found her son unresponsive. The infant was rushed to a hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered severe physical trauma. Medical professionals later confirmed the child survived but would require ongoing care due to lasting complications.
White was arrested and charged with physical abuse of a child causing great bodily harm and neglect of a child resulting in great bodily harm. During court proceedings, prosecutors emphasized that the child was completely defenseless and that the injuries were the result of a moment of uncontrolled anger.
In Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Judge Anderson M. Gansner sentenced White to 12 years of incarceration, followed by seven years of extended supervision once released. The court cited the seriousness of the crime and the long-term impact on the child when issuing the sentence.
During sentencing, the judge stated that frustration, regardless of its source, can never justify violence—especially against a child. The court also ordered White to participate in treatment programs while incarcerated.
The case has drawn widespread public reaction due to the disturbing nature of the incident and the fact that it stemmed from a video game dispute. Child welfare advocates have pointed to the case as a reminder of the importance of anger management and the need for immediate support when caregivers feel overwhelmed.
