Tyler Perry Donates $250k in Gift Cards to TSA Workers After Cash Plan Blocked

ATLANTA, Ga.Filmmaker and media mogul Tyler Perry has donated $250,000 in Visa gift cards to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, after federal regulations prevented him from handing out cash directly to employees.

Perry initially arrived at the airport with plans to personally distribute cash to TSA officers who have been working without pay during the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown. However, the effort was halted due to federal ethics rules that prohibit on-duty TSA employees from accepting direct monetary gifts.

Undeterred, Perry worked with TSA officials and union representatives to find a legal alternative. The solution: distribute $1,000 Visa gift cards to approximately 250 TSA workers, totaling $250,000. The donations were routed through proper channels to comply with federal guidelines.

The gesture comes amid a prolonged government shutdown that has left TSA officers nationwide without pay since mid-February. Many workers have faced severe financial hardship, with some reportedly sleeping in their cars, taking on second jobs, or even quitting due to the lack of income.

The situation has also impacted airport operations. Staffing shortages and high absentee rates have led to long security lines at major airports, including Atlanta, where wait times have stretched for hours.

Although Perry was unable to hand out cash as originally planned, he still spent time at the airport meeting TSA officers, shaking hands, and thanking them for their service during the crisis. Workers reportedly expressed gratitude for both the financial assistance and the personal support.

Union officials confirmed that the gift card distribution went through a formal legal review process, ensuring compliance with rules governing gifts to federal employees.

The DHS shutdown remains unresolved as lawmakers in Washington continue to debate funding measures. TSA employees have collectively missed significant wages during the impasse, contributing to operational disruptions across U.S. airports.

Despite the uncertainty, Perry’s donation has provided immediate relief for hundreds of workers and drawn attention to the challenges faced by federal employees during the shutdown.

This is not the first time Perry has stepped in during a crisis. The Atlanta-based filmmaker has previously donated millions to assist families affected by government shutdowns and economic hardship, reinforcing his reputation for philanthropy.
