LONGVIEW, Texas — Three East Texas women are facing assault charges following an alleged attack outside a Longview nightclub that has drawn widespread attention on social media after the victim claimed the suspects repeatedly shouted “Free Karmelo” during the incident.
According to Gregg County Jail records, Dejae Shalyn Brown, 26, of Pittsburg, Alana Mumphrey, 25, of Longview, and Ciarrianne Fuller, 21, of Longview, have each been charged with assault causing bodily injury.
Court records show each defendant received a $20,000 bond.
The alleged assault reportedly occurred outside Whiskey J’s nightclub in Longview during the early morning hours of June 21.
The victim has publicly stated that she was attacked by a group of women after leaving the venue, claiming the assault was unprovoked.
In social media posts that quickly went viral, the victim alleged the attackers yelled “Free Karmelo” throughout the incident.
She also claimed the group stated they intended to target “the smallest white girl they could find.” Authorities have filed assault charges in connection with the case, but investigators have not publicly confirmed the victim’s allegations regarding the reported statements or established a motive for the attack.
Longview Police spokesperson LaDarian Brown confirmed that the investigation remains active. Police have also addressed concerns surrounding online discussions about possible retaliation stemming from the incident.
During a press briefing, Brown said the department is monitoring social media activity and has been communicating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding online threats. He emphasized that law enforcement has not identified a verified broader threat to the public but warned that any credible threats or attempts to organize violence would be investigated.
The phrase “Free Karmelo” appears to reference Karmelo Anthony, who was convicted earlier this year in the fatal stabbing of Texas teenager Austin Metcalf.
The victim’s allegations have fueled speculation online about a possible connection between the assault and support for Anthony, though investigators have not announced any evidence confirming that the reported chant reflects the suspects’ motive.
As of publication, prosecutors have not released additional details about the evidence supporting the charges, and no court filings outlining the defendants’ responses to the allegations have been made public.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
