Wisconsin Rapids, WI: A bizarre and dangerous incident unfolded in Wisconsin Rapids yesterday when a 37-year-old man allegedly stole an ambulance while a critically ill patient was inside, prompting a high-speed police chase.
According to local authorities, the suspect, Benjamin L. Feltz, reportedly jumped into the driver’s seat of the ambulance while completely naked as paramedics were loading a patient suffering from advanced kidney disease. The patient was still on the stretcher when the vehicle was driven away, according to police reports.
“The patient pleaded with him, saying she was dying from kidney disease,” said a law enforcement source. “It was an extremely dangerous situation for everyone involved.”
The ensuing pursuit lasted roughly 18 miles, with speeds reportedly exceeding 90 mph, as multiple law enforcement units attempted to bring the ambulance to a stop. Officers eventually deployed a tire deflation device, forcing the vehicle into a muddy cornfield, where Feltz was apprehended without physical injury to himself or the patient.
Authorities have charged Feltz with multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including reckless endangerment, vehicle theft, fleeing law enforcement, indecent exposure, and making threats. He is currently held on a $100,000 bond and is undergoing a mental competency evaluation.
This incident has raised questions about emergency vehicle security and the risks posed to patients during transport. Law enforcement agencies are reviewing protocols to prevent similar events in the future.
