Three teenage girls have been arrested after investigators say a lit firework was thrown through the window of a Citrus Heights home, igniting a fire that destroyed a nursery prepared for an unborn baby.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 30, when emergency crews responded to reports of a house fire.
Authorities say the blaze was largely contained to the baby’s nursery, but smoke and fire damage rendered the room and many of the family’s newly purchased baby supplies unusable.
According to investigators, home surveillance video allegedly captured two of the juveniles approaching the residence before lighting a firework and tossing it through the nursery window. Police said the incident was intentional rather than accidental and quickly launched an arson investigation.
The family, who are expecting their baby within days, said they were devastated by the destruction. The father reportedly managed to slow the spread of the flames with a garden hose before firefighters arrived and extinguished the remaining fire. No injuries were reported.
Investigators believe the attack stemmed from an ongoing dispute involving another juvenile who lives at the home. Family members told local media they recognized the suspects from previous conflicts involving one of their children. Authorities have not publicly released additional details because those involved are juveniles.
The Citrus Heights Police Department confirmed that three juvenile girls have since been arrested in connection with the case. They are facing multiple felony allegations, including aggravated arson, arson, burglary, and conspiracy. The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors will determine how the case proceeds through the juvenile justice system.
The destruction has forced the expecting parents to replace nearly everything they had prepared for their newborn. The nursery, which had been fully furnished ahead of the baby’s arrival, suffered extensive fire and smoke damage. Family members said many essential items—including furniture, clothing, diapers, and other supplies—were either burned or contaminated by smoke.
Following news of the incident, members of the community rallied around the family with donations and messages of support. A fundraising campaign was launched to help offset the costs of replacing baby necessities and repairing the damaged room as the parents prepare to welcome their child.
Authorities are asking anyone with additional information related to the incident to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department as the investigation continues.
