Newly released body-camera footage shown during the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony has provided a dramatic look at the moments immediately following the fatal stabbing of Texas high school student Austin Metcalf.
The footage, presented as evidence during Anthony’s trial in Collin County, captured the then-17-year-old suspect shortly after the April 2025 incident at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.
Prosecutors used the video as part of their case against Anthony, who was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Metcalf.
According to testimony and video evidence presented in court, Anthony was taken into custody by responding officers after the confrontation that left Metcalf with a fatal stab wound.
Bodycam footage reportedly shows Anthony becoming emotional while speaking with officers and making several statements regarding the incident. Prosecutors highlighted comments in which Anthony acknowledged his involvement in the stabbing while also claiming he acted in self-defense.
The case stems from an altercation that occurred during a weather delay at a track meet held at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco. Authorities said the confrontation began near a team tent and escalated into a physical dispute. Metcalf, a 17-year-old student-athlete, suffered a single stab wound to the chest and later died from his injuries.
Jurors were also shown additional bodycam footage from first responders attempting life-saving measures on Metcalf in the moments after the stabbing.
The emotional video reportedly prompted visible reactions inside the courtroom, including tears from members of the victim’s family as paramedics worked to save the teenager’s life.
Throughout the trial, Anthony’s defense team argued that he acted in self-defense during the confrontation. Prosecutors, however, maintained that the evidence supported a murder conviction. After hearing testimony from witnesses, law enforcement officers, and experts, a jury rejected the self-defense claim and found Anthony guilty of first-degree murder. He was later sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The release of the bodycam footage has renewed public attention on the high-profile case, which generated widespread debate and national media coverage throughout the investigation and trial. Additional evidence presented in court included surveillance video, photographs from the scene, and testimony from witnesses who were present during the fatal encounter.
As legal proceedings continue, Anthony’s attorneys have indicated they plan to challenge the conviction through the appeals process. Meanwhile, the Metcalf family continues to mourn the loss of their son, whose death sent shockwaves through the Texas high school sports community and beyond.
