Yuba City, California — A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee is recovering in the hospital after police say a co-worker allegedly threw scalding hot cooking oil on him during a shift, leaving him with severe burn injuries and prompting a felony investigation.
The incident occurred on May 30 inside a McDonald’s restaurant in Yuba City, California. Authorities say the victim, identified as Jacob Smith, was working as a shift manager when he was suddenly attacked by a fellow employee.
According to police and local reports, the suspect allegedly threw hot oil on Smith before fleeing the scene. He was later identified as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, who initially went missing after the incident but was later located and taken into custody.
Smith suffered serious burn injuries to his face, neck, arm, and back. Medical officials say he was transported to UC Davis Medical Center, where he remains in the intensive care unit receiving specialized treatment for second-degree burns.
His mother, Amber Smith, described the injuries as extremely painful and said her son faces a long recovery that may include skin graft surgeries. She has also launched a fundraiser to help cover medical expenses and time away from work.
Police have not released a confirmed motive for the attack, and investigators say it remains unclear what led to the incident. Authorities have charged Bluett with multiple felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon and causing serious bodily injury. He is currently being held in custody without bail.
