Ohio Pastor Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter in Teen’s Death

A heartbreaking case out of Canton, Ohio, has ended in a guilty verdict, as a youth pastor was convicted in connection with the death of a teenage church member.

Malachi Nichols-Williams, 14, died after falling from a moving van in September 2025—an incident that has left a family and community grieving.

The driver, Rushon Patterson II, who served as a mentor and pastor to the teen, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Witnesses said Patterson allowed multiple teens to hang onto the outside of the van as it moved through a neighborhood.

When the vehicle hit a pothole, Malachi was thrown off and suffered catastrophic head injuries.

Malachi’s mother previously described Patterson as a father figure in her children’s lives, underscoring the emotional complexity of the case.

Despite that relationship, the jury ultimately concluded that Patterson’s actions were criminally negligent.

Malachi remained on life support for several days before his family made the difficult decision to let him go. His organs were later donated in an effort to help others.

The case has sparked renewed conversations about youth safety and accountability in community and church settings.
