Police “Horseplay” With Firearms Ends in Accidental Shooting Inside Station Parking Garage

Pasadena, California — A recently released police video shows a serious and unusual incident inside the Pasadena Police Department parking structure in which an officer was accidentally shot by a fellow officer during what officials described as unsafe “horseplay” involving loaded firearms.

The incident occurred on September 7, 2025, at approximately 6:18 p.m., as officers were preparing for a shift inside the department’s parking facility.

According to Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris, the situation began when a patrol vehicle pulled into the area where two officers were standing near another police car. One of the standing officers briefly drew his firearm and pointed it toward the approaching vehicle before re-holstering it.

Moments later, the officer inside the patrol vehicle also drew his service weapon. As he handled the firearm, it discharged while still inside the vehicle, sending a round through the windshield and striking one of the standing officers in the shoulder.

Emergency personnel responded immediately, and the injured officer was transported for medical treatment. Officials confirmed the officer suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and has since recovered.

The department released dashcam and critical incident footage of the shooting this week following an internal investigation and review by outside authorities. California law generally requires the release of such footage within 45 days, though in this case officials said the release was delayed to preserve investigative integrity.

Chief Harris described the incident as “regretful conduct” and emphasized that it resulted from “unsafe and out-of-policy horseplay involving loaded firearms.” He also stated that disciplinary measures have been taken, though specific details were not disclosed. The investigation remains ongoing and is being reviewed by both the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office and internal affairs units.

“This type of behavior is not consistent with the standards and expectations of the department,” Harris said in a public statement accompanying the video release. “Horseplay and failure to follow safety protocols will not be tolerated.”

The released footage has sparked renewed discussion about firearm handling protocols and accountability within law enforcement agencies, particularly regarding the risks associated with negligent weapon handling even among trained officers.
