Rashaun Jones Back in Court Over K2 Papers as He Awaits Retrial in 2006 Murder of UM Teammate.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies re-arrested Rashaun Jones, 40, at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Metrowest Detention Center, where he was being held without bond in connection with the first-degree murder case.

According to a Miami-Dade corrections officer’s report, the officer and a K-9 discovered “a half sheet and 17 individually torn sheets” containing suspected K2 at the facility on March 27, 2024. The discovery was documented in a report filed by a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy.

The former University of Miami football player accused in the 2006 killing of teammate Bryan Pata, continues to face legal proceedings as his high-profile criminal case moves through the court system.

Jones was arrested in 2021 in connection with the death of Pata, a standout Miami Hurricanes defensive lineman who was fatally shot outside his apartment in November 2006.

Prosecutors have alleged that Jones was responsible for the killing, while Jones has maintained his innocence.

The case drew national attention because of the length of the investigation and the fact that Jones and Pata were teammates at the University of Miami. Prosecutors presented evidence they said connected Jones to the shooting, while defense attorneys argued that the case relied heavily on circumstantial evidence.

Jones has appeared in court as the legal process continues. During proceedings, attorneys on both sides have continued to dispute the evidence and circumstances surrounding Pata’s death.

Reports circulating online have also raised questions about an alleged jail contraband incident involving Jones. However, details of that allegation could not be independently verified through available court records or reliable news reporting at the time of publication.

Authorities and court officials have not publicly confirmed additional charges related to jail contraband involving Jones.

The Bryan Pata case remains one of the most closely followed murder cases connected to college football. Pata’s family has continued to seek justice nearly two decades after his death, while Jones’ legal team has continued to challenge the prosecution’s claims.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as additional verified information becomes available.
