Former South Carolina Store Owner Stands Trial in Fatal Shooting of Teen.

A murder trial is underway in South Carolina for former convenience store owner Rick Chow, who is accused of fatally shooting 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton during a confrontation outside a Columbia-area gas station in 2023.

Prosecutors allege Chow chased the teenager after wrongly suspecting him of stealing bottled water from the store.

According to court testimony, Carmack-Belton was shot in the back after a pursuit that stretched more than 100 yards from the business. Authorities have said there was no evidence the teen stole anything.

The case has drawn national attention and sparked protests and calls for justice throughout South Carolina since the shooting occurred on May 28, 2023.

Community advocates and the victim’s family have argued the killing reflected broader concerns about racial profiling and excessive force.

Defense attorneys for Chow contend the shooting was an act of self-defense and defense of others.

They argue Carmack-Belton possessed a firearm and threatened Chow’s son during the confrontation, forcing Chow to make what they described as a “split-second decision.”

Prosecutors dispute that account, maintaining the teen never pointed the weapon at anyone before the shooting.

Last year, a judge denied Chow immunity under South Carolina’s “Stand Your Ground” law, allowing the murder case to proceed to trial. Efforts by the defense to delay or relocate the trial were also rejected.

Opening statements began this week in Richland County, where jurors heard sharply different accounts of the deadly encounter. Prosecutors described the shooting as “senseless” and “heinous,” while the defense called the incident tragic but legally justified.

The trial is expected to continue for several days as attorneys present surveillance footage, witness testimony, and forensic evidence related to the shooting.
