Dallas Police Officers Ibrahim Kante and Kenneth Harper conducted a traffic stop in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue for a registration violation.
During the stop, officers arrested 37-year-old Stacey Huffman on charges of Driving While License Invalid, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
After his arrest, Officer Kante handcuffed Huffman and secured him in the rear seat of the patrol vehicle while officers completed their investigation. While in custody, Huffman was able to free his left hand from the handcuffs and concealed his hands behind his back. As officers began transporting him to jail, Huffman removed his seatbelt and attempted to open the locked rear door of the patrol vehicle.
At approximately 6:10 p.m., officers stopped on northbound Interstate 35 near Illinois Avenue to restrain Huffman. As both officers exited the vehicle, Huffman climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away while Officer Harper entered the rear compartment. Officer Kante remained outside the vehicle.
Officer Harper deployed his Taser, but it proved ineffective when Huffman pulled the wires free. Harper then drew his duty weapon and struck Huffman on the side of the head after Huffman accelerated the vehicle.
Huffman continued driving erratically, causing Officer Harper to be thrown violently around the rear compartment.
After traveling approximately 1,000 feet at speeds reaching 50 mph, Huffman opened the driver’s door and exited the moving patrol vehicle.
Officer Harper regained control of the vehicle and prevented a collision. Huffman was rendered unconscious and taken into custody.
Both Huffman and Officer Harper were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officer Harper was treated and released, while Huffman remained hospitalized.
Upon his release from the hospital, Huffman will face the original charges of Driving While License Invalid, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, along with additional charges of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Escape from Custody.
