A Miami-Dade County teacher made a court appearance Tuesday morning for a bond hearing, one day after being taken into custody.
Authorities with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office say 53-year-old Michael Enriquez is accused of engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student at American Senior High School, allegedly beginning in May 2025.
Investigators report that Enriquez and the student, who was 17 at the time, met off campus after school twice in May and June of last year, and that those encounters involved sexual activity.
One student who spoke to Local 10 News called the situation “disgusting,” while also noting that the responsibility ultimately lies with the adult involved.
Officials say contact between the two stopped during the summer break, but resumed once the new school year began in August 2025, continuing the alleged relationship.
The final reported encounter took place on May 14, 2026. According to the arrest report, that was the only time the two had sexual intercourse, and the student was 18 at that point.
Authorities have not released details on how the investigation began or how they established the timeline of events.
Students at the school expressed concern over the allegations, with some saying it is troubling that a trusted adult in a school environment could be involved in such conduct and that students may feel vulnerable in these situations.
Enriquez was ordered held without bond during his court appearance and directed to have no contact with the victim or the school.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has confirmed that he will be terminated from his position.
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of the arrest of an employee from American Senior High School. Upon learning of the suspected behavior, the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department initiated an investigation, which resulted in his removal from the school site and his subsequent arrest by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
