Former CIA Official Accused of Stealing More Than $40 Million in Gold Bars

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A former senior Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) official has been arrested and charged after federal investigators allegedly discovered more than $40 million worth of gold bars, millions of dollars in cash, and dozens of luxury watches hidden at his Virginia residence.

According to federal court documents, David Rush, a former government executive with top-secret security clearance, is accused of unlawfully obtaining hundreds of gold bars and foreign currency from the federal government under the guise of work-related expenses. Investigators allege that between late 2025 and early 2026, Rush requested and received large quantities of gold and foreign currency that could not later be accounted for.

The investigation intensified after discrepancies were identified involving government assets. FBI agents executed a search warrant at Rush’s home on May 18, where authorities say they recovered approximately 303 one-kilogram gold bars valued at more than $40 million. Agents also reportedly seized roughly $2 million in cash and approximately 35 luxury watches, including several high-end Rolex timepieces.

Rush was arrested the following day and charged with theft of public funds. Federal prosecutors allege there is probable cause to believe he knowingly converted government property for personal use. The FBI is conducting the investigation in coordination with the CIA and the Department of Justice.

The case has attracted additional attention because investigators claim Rush may have falsified portions of his educational and military background throughout his government career. Court filings indicate authorities found no evidence supporting some of his alleged claims regarding university degrees and military aviation credentials. Investigators are also examining allegations that he improperly received compensation related to military leave.

Security experts say the case raises serious questions about oversight procedures within federal agencies and how such a large quantity of valuable government assets could allegedly be removed without triggering immediate detection. Lawmakers and intelligence officials are expected to scrutinize internal controls as the investigation moves forward.

Rush remains in federal custody pending further court proceedings. His attorney has declined public comment on the allegations. As with all criminal cases, the charges remain allegations, and Rush is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
