Uber Driver Killed Woman's Son After Getting Angry Over Parking Spot at Walgreens

A Texas Uber driver is facing a murder charge after police say a disagreement over a parking space outside a Walgreens escalated into a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 32-year-old man.

According to investigators, the incident happened on July 2 at a Walgreens in El Paso, Texas.

Police allege that 26-year-old Nicholas Wells became angry after a woman parked her vehicle in a handicapped parking space next to his car. The woman was reportedly accompanied by her adult son, later identified as Christopher Brandon Steven.

Authorities say Wells confronted the family in the parking lot, complaining that they had parked too close to his vehicle. Although the family moved their vehicle to another parking space, investigators allege the confrontation did not end there.

Police say Wells followed the family into the Walgreens, where surveillance video reportedly captured another confrontation between Wells and Steven.

According to the arrest affidavit, Steven allegedly chest-bumped Wells during the argument, and Wells responded by punching him. Investigators say Wells then pulled a handgun from his waistband, leading to a struggle between the two men.

Authorities allege Wells fired three rounds during the confrontation. Police claim one of the shots struck Steven while the two were struggling over the firearm, while two additional shots were fired after Steven had already fallen to the floor.

Emergency responders rushed Steven to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from inside the Walgreens and interviewed witnesses before arresting Wells. Police say the evidence led them to conclude that the use of deadly force was not justified under the circumstances.

Following his arrest, Wells allegedly told investigators that he pulled out the firearm in an attempt to de-escalate the confrontation after Steven became physical. However, detectives say surveillance video and witness statements contradict portions of his account.

Police also reportedly reviewed recorded jail phone calls in which Wells discussed the incident after his arrest.

Wells has since been booked into the El Paso County Jail on a charge of murder. As of publication, court records do not indicate whether he has entered a plea. It is also unclear whether he has retained an attorney to represent him.

The fatal shooting has drawn widespread attention because investigators say it all began with a dispute over a parking space—an encounter that police allege escalated from a verbal argument outside the store to deadly gunfire inside the Walgreens just minutes later.

The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors are expected to present additional evidence as the case moves through the Texas court system.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
